Simple Rules for Free Play Futsal - Soccer in the Gym

Cincinnati Street Soccer – House Rules for Free Play Futsal

1) 5 players versus 5 players, including a goalkeeper.

2) Goalkeepers can touch the ball inside the arc, aka the three point line. The goalkeeper can roam free, but there is only one goalkeeper at a time.

3) Subs can enter anytime at the half line.

4) No offsides.

5)  Keep the ball below head height.

            6)  No goalkeeper punts.

7) No slide tackles. Players must not go to ground to steal possession back.

8) No Throw-ins. Instead ball is placed on ground and passed in to a teammate with the foot.

9) Rules of 5 Part One. For free kicks and corners and side outs the opposing team has to be at least 5 yards away from the ball.

·          10) Rules of 5 Part Two. The team taking the ball on a restart must play the ball in 5 seconds after the ball is set on the ground or for the restart. Goalkeeper possession counts as a restart.

•          11) Rules of 5 Part Three. Games are played to 5 goals. Winning team stays on. If a single team wins 5 games, then  new teams are made.

            12) With a penalty kick, all players behind the ball except for the penalty kicker.

·           13)  No goal kicks. When the ball goes out of bounds beyond the goal, the goalkeeper takes   possession and plays the ball out with hands or feet.

14) No repeat back passes to the goalkeeper. If the goalkeeper plays the ball out, then she can’t touch it again until the ball is touched again by the other team, or unless she is actually in the  opposing half of the court. This rule applies to any goalkeeper possession, not just plays using  the keeper’s hands.

"Hey, You're a Good Player"

"Hey, You're a Good Player"

Looking for a safe, uncrowded place for our kids to play pick up soccer in the cold months, we found Northern Kentucky Street Soccer, which hosts a free game in a church gym in Fort Wright.  So we drove there and had a blast every Sunday night. Two parents, Craig and Stacey, were hosting. Every game has lots of music blasting. It's a fun environment with a good mix of boys and girls and a variety of skill levels. At the end of that first night, before we even knew one another, our kids met when Liya, the older of two, walked up to Eleanor, who was new and said, "hey, you're a good player." Encouraged like that, Eleanor wanted to come back, again and again to Sunday night futsal.  Turns out, Eleanor and Liya lived in the same neighborhood and that very next soccer season Liya ended up on the same team as Jack, Eleanor's brother.

Inspired by what we found there, Liya's dad Donaldo and I started talking about how to bring a free pick up game closer to our own neighborhood.  Last winter we hosted a few games at a few Cincinnati Recreation Centers and then ran a weekly game over the summer at the little futsal court in Over-the-Rhine. We also set up a little Facebook page and registered our little association. Throughout the fall we got to work looking for a gym and more importantly for a partner church or recreation center. Based on all the advice we got from Crag and Stacey at Northern Kentucky Street Soccer we knew we needed a headquarters for our neighborhood games this winter. Thanks to Father Rudy and Ms. Gloria at St. Boniface in Northside, we found a home. Now Liya and Eleanor (and her borther) have a neighborhood game in their own neighborhood.  One that's free and open and fun.

This blog will be the place on line where we share written information that can't fit on a Facebook post. Stories, links to resources, world cup predictions, some legaleese for the association, and copies of our little zine, Street Soccer Cincinnati, which we will share as blog posts, and eventually print to distribute at games.
